Video Premiere: Pia Isa ‘Quiet Beach’ – Solo Album Drops ‘Distorted Chants’ Drops March 25th

Pia Isa is the moniker for the solo venture of Pia Isaksen, a name that should be familiar as the vocalist and bassist from Norwegian psych doomers Superlynx. Although for this new project, Pia still has one foot firmly planted in heavy drones, her approach, both lyrically and spiritually, takes her on a more personal voyage, which has now been realised with the help of Superlynx drummer Ole Teigen, and desert rock guitar guru Gary Arce.

As Pia prepares to release her debut album Distorted Chants on March 25th through Argonauta Records, it’s our absolute honour to be able to bring you the video for the track Quiet Beach for which Pia reflects…

‘The theme of Quiet Beach is represented by water – big wild waves, moving towards a quiet beach. I feel very connected to the sea and a quiet beach to me is a strong representation of peace of mind and the best place I can find myself. I wanted to get a sort of wavy feeling in the song, the sound and video too. This is also one of the first proper videos I have made myself, since becoming more interested in working with video the last couple of years.’

Pia Isa is the solo project of bassist/vocalist Pia Isaksen from Norwegian heavy psych/doom band Superlynx. Having played and written music for most of her life, a solo album has been brewing in Pia’s mind for a long time. Finally, everything has aligned for her first one to materialize, and Distorted Chants was recorded in early 2021. As much as she loves playing with Superlynx (formed 2013) and other people, her ideas for this album seemed more right to work through on her own.

Pia’s music is rooted in slow heavy drones but also has a lighter, dreamy and hopeful side. She is inspired by massive soundscapes, heavy psych, meditative moods, desert vibes and eastern scales as well as her Nordic coastal surroundings. Superlynx listeners may recognize her slow, heavy, minimalistic riffs and haunting, sometimes chanting, voice. Pia has an open mind to a lot of different music. Not caring about fitting to any genres but channelling honest and heartfelt music in her own way. The lyrics on Distorted Chants are deeply personal and stretches from the very inner self and throughout nature.

Writing and recording the album has been a very cathartic process. All songs and lyrics are written by Pia who also plays guitars and bass in addition to singing. Gary Arce from Yawning Man, Big Scenic Nowhere, Yawning Man, Yawning Sons has joined in with dreamy guitars on three songs. The drums and percussion are played by Superlynx drummer Ole Teigen who also recorded, mixed and produced the album in his studio Crowtown Recordings while Gary Arce’s guitars recorded by Mario Lalli.
