Eindhoven Psych Lab: Guido Segers Previews Two Days Of Freak Out Psychedelia
To call Eindhoven Psych Lab a sort of a Roadburn Light would be unfair. The new festival shares a similar idea as the legendary gathering that takes place a few miles away; love of a specific type of music. Psych Lab takes place in Eindhovens’ most well known venue; The Effenaar. For two days the whole venue will be turned into a futuristic, psychedelic music Valhalla.
So yeah, a bit of Roadburn, but different on the 6th and 7th of June 2014, with a lot of good bands that you possibly wouldn’t find there, but that somehow connect to the whole style surrounding it. For the organisation the venue collaborated with the internationally known Liverpool International Festival Of Psychedelia. The line-up tells you as much with the bulk of the bands hailing from the UK.
That’s mainly the case on day one, where names like Wooden Shjips, Gnod, Mugstar, The Cosmic Dead, Hookworms and Spectrum. Now, the Shaman is always keen to hear something different. If it happens to be psychedelic and trippy, the better. Friday has plenty of that to offer. Apart from the obvious bigger names, there’s the Japanese Nisennenmondai, who create amazing instrumental spaced out music that you can actually dance to. Should we even mention the entity Teeth Of The Sea, who are a phenomenon on their own?
Peter J Taylor has been compared to Rhys Chatham and Glenn Branca. If that isn’t enough to excite you, it is worth pointing out he was looking for guitar players for a big band to do something special at Psych Lab. The intensity of Great Ytene is also something to witness. Jean Michel Jarre, jamming with God Is An Astronaut? There’s a lot more actually, so we’re only highlighting some of the interesting acts of Psych Lab. Walter Roadburn will be there too, doing a DJ set.
We haven’t even started about the Saturday with bands like the Canadian Suuns and garage rockers Night Beats. That’s just two names from the list, which also includes Pink Mountaintops, The Growlers and Terakraft from Mali with their Saharan desert blues and that’s far from it.
Do you want to hear something that makes you feel as if you are floating through space? Because Chilean spacrockers Föllakzoid are going to take off and know how to take the visitors for a ride. If not them, then the only Dutch act playing the fest: Radar Men From The Moon. Playing in their own city, the fourpiece will again rock the venue where they presented their new album earlier this year. These guys are definitely one of the more interesting bands playing Psych Lab.
Elephant Stone will invoke the times of early psychedelia and The Woken Trees know how to add a darker note to the lineup. The name Wall Of Death may sound like a hardcore band ended up on the line-up, but the drugged, dreamy sounds of them have nothing to do with violent crowd participation.
The line-up is full of surprises and the Shaman hopes this edition takes off, because there’s nothing better than music that overwhelms, surprises and fascinates us.
