Ggu:ll ‘Waan:Hoon’ CS 2014
Something evil has awakened in the sewers of Tilburg. A vile monster, fed by the many years of musical warfare that has taken place in the hometown of the mighty Roadburn and Incubate festivals. The hideous creature goes by the name of Ggu:ll. A name as strange and incomprehensible as the moods provoked on this tape offering. I have seen this lumbering titan take the stage a couple of times. Defiling the Cul De Sac at Roadburn and destroying the Stage 01 room of 013 at Incubate.
Now this creature has finally been captured on cassette.
First off ‘Waan’ is a six minute exercise in torturous doom. The skin is flayed from your limbs and a constant barrage of locusts eats your face. The riffing is beyond heavy and so low that only whales and elephants can fully appreciate what is going on here. The completely tormented and inhuman screeching that comes from vocalist William`s throat is the stuff of nightmares and perfect for this “musick”.
‘Hoon’ is more torture. This is a nine minute long trip to the deepest crevices of the human soul.
There is a place where the mind transforms into hell and that is where the music of Ggu:ll comes from. Bleak, desperate and desolate are the keywords here. The atmosphere is so thick and smothering that I can imagine people getting anxiety attacks or claustrophobia from this tape.
After fifteen minutes it is over. I am left with a gaping hole in my soul and a feeling of having been abused. This is some powerful music and should not be taken lightly.
The tape, released by the excellent Tartarus Records, comes in a handmade cardboard cover, beautifully silk screened and the tape itself is also beautifully silk screened. I cannot recommend this enough!
