It must be a week for the unknown as Italy’s Maya Mountains were another new band to fall into my inbox when we were asked to stream San Saguaro, their first single in twelve years. An amalgamation of dream like psych and stoner rock, this short introduction to the band is taken from their new album Era that’s set for release on 17th April via Go Down Records.
The band comments on the track…
‘San Saguaro is the first single taken from Maya Mountains’ new album out on April 17th. It’s called Era and it’s a concept album that tells the lysergic adventure of Enrique Dominguez. In this song our psychic traveller, landed in the desert of an alien world, pricks himself with the big cactus called saguaro – As they whisper in my ear, melt their fingers with my head – From here comes the transition to a new dystopian landscape, populated by some disturbing epic figures…’
Now we’ve all read or heard the news of the horrific situation Italy (and the rest of the world) is finding itself in right now, so show your support, stream San Saguaro below before heading over to the Go Down Records webstore to pre-order Era prior to its release on the 17th April.
More on Maya Mountains & ‘Era’
Maya Mountains were formed in 2004 in Venice, but the actual line-up was completed in 2005, with Alessandro Toffanello on bass and vocals, Emanuel Poletto on guitar and Marco Bortoletto on drums. The band is close to stoner rock, heavy psych, 70’s sounds and bands like Black Sabbath, Melvins and Kyuss. In 2006 Maya Mountains recorded their first album Hash And Pornography under the direction of Giulio ‘Ragno’ Favero and was released by Go Down Records in 2008.
After 2 years of intense live shows, the band went to a hiatus. Between 2010 and 2014 all members were involved in different side-projects, both under Go Down Records, with the names of Goliath and Tundra, the former being a collective musical project, founded and coordinated by the drummer Marco ‘Martinez’ Bortoletto.
In 2015, Maya Mountains started to compose new music. Long jam sessions, new riffs, visions and concepts were the bases of the new album Era, their second album that was recorded, mixed by Edoardo Pellizzari and produced by Alessandro Siniscalchi.
Era is telling the story of Enrique Dominguez, a homeless soul who, after a leap in time, lands in the desert of an unknown world. He plunges into a cactus and falls into a hallucination in an uninhabited city. Beyond the walls, dark presences await him, Minotaurs and Cerberos follow him to drink his blood. On top of the sacred tower he talks to a sorcerer, recites prayers with a cat mask, flying through the constellations of infinite space, where he will orbit forever, between galaxies and star dust.
This inspiration allowed Maya Mountains to move among these dreamlike scenarios and twelve years after the debut album Hash And Pornography, the Venetian band returns with a sound exploration that evokes dark and deep visions of a fantastic journey and embraces the work of their last 5 years.
