Premiere: Psychlona ‘Rainbird’ – Taken From Their New Album ‘Palo Verde’ That Drops 19th August

Bradford’s Psychlona have been creating quite a stir in the stoner, doom, and psych rock scene since their formation six years ago, and in 2022, the West Yorkshire lads are preparing to release their new album Palo Verde on the recently formed Psycho Waxx, a label imprint from the now infamous Psycho Las Vegas Festival.

After last month’s video launch for the track 1975, today, The Shaman is beyond elated to bring you the second cut from the eight track album of sizzling stoner, psych, and fuzz rock with the seven-minute riff shredder Rainbird.

Guitarist and vocalist Phil Hey muses over its background, ‘The song originally came together from a bassline Martyn was playing. It sounded kinda trippy and dreamy, so when we eventually got around to working on it we added some simple chord progressions and ambient guitar noises from Dave, then we brought the defiant, heavier play-out at the end.’

Then adds, ‘Lyrically it’s about not taking loved ones or anything for granted as they might not be around for as long as you hope. It had a couple of working titles then last autumn I was sat in a taverna in Greece in the sun enjoying life and noticed unusual birds riding the thermals above, and the taverna was called Rainbird. It all seemed very fitting.’

More On Psychlona & ‘Palo Verde’

Formed in Bradford in the summer of 2016, Psychlona have fast become one of the UK’s most coveted heavy psych rock bands.

Stealing influence from punk; the Palm Desert scene and 60s/70s psychedelia, two chapters deep into their cosmic journey (following 2018’s Mojo Rising and 2020’s Venus Skytrip), their highly anticipated third is on the horizon and could well be their most electrifying yet.

Teaming up with Psycho Waxx, the in-house label of Psycho Las Vegas Festival – America’s leading and legendary weekend of rock ‘n’ roll debauchery; matchless curation and aural attitude – Psychlona have well and truly found their spiritual home.

Arriving next month, Palo Verde is their third studio album of original material and Psycho Waxx’s first, following on from their inaugural release, Löve Me Förever: A Tribute to Motörhead; a compilation that featured contributions from Blackwater Holylight, High On Fire, King Dude, EyeHateGod, and many more.

Low-slung and leaning into that desert groove, Palo Verde is a time machine where guitars traverse the cosmos and reproduce the vibrations of rock’s most decadent decade. Steeped in subculture, sea change and profound sonic transformation, from the proto-metal of the late 60s, ‘Kiss-mania’ and headlong into the heaviness of Judas Priest and Black Sabbath.
