Video Premiere: Novarupta ‘Broken Blue Cascades’ Featuring Josh Graham – New Album ‘Marine Snow’ Releases November

15th October 202019th November 2020 Lee Edwards Alex Stjernfeldt, Broken Blue Cascades, Josh Graham, Marine Snow, Novarupta, Post-Metal, Post-Rock, Suicide Records

As Novarupta, the brainchild of multi-instrumentalist Alex Stjernfeldt, prepares to unleash Marine Snow, the second instalment of a four album ‘elemental forces’ series that’ll be released via Suicide Records on 13th November, today it’s with great delight we here at The Shaman bring you the video for the opening track Broken Blue Cascades.

Novarupta - Alex Stjernfeldt

Featuring none other than Josh Graham on vocal duties, known for his visual prowess with Neurosis, along with his own musical outings, most notably A Storm Of Light and Red Sparowes, this near eight minute track is a journey into expansive post-rock and metal, Alex Stjernfeldt comments…

‘Broken Blue Cascades is not just the opening track on Marine Snow, it is also the bridge from the final track [Ourang Medan] on our last album, into our new album. The music is based on tribal minimalism and the vocals are the driving force of the song. It’s the beginning of the descent, the pressure of life and society. The politics we need to deal with and the way the world looks today.’

While Josh Graham adds ‘Broken Blue Cascades explores humanity’s role in the ongoing Sixth Extinction Event and the propulsion of the Anthropocene epoch, specifically focusing on the destructive power of the rising oceans. Benevolent ocean waves will slowly cut apart our cities and redefine our coastal existence. The human species has evolved into a large hive existence, a virus overtaking the planet, destroying and consuming all it touches. No one is blind. No one is blameless. The eyes are all of us.’

More On Novarupta & ‘Marine Snow’

Formed in 2018 from the pyres of time spent in Swedish post-metal outfit The Moth Gatherer, Alex Stjernfeldt’s Novarupta has gone on to envelop almost every corner of Sweden’s underground rock and metal community. Named after one of the largest volcanic eruptions of the 20th Century, this November, Novarupta once again join forces with Suicide Records for the release of Marine Snow; the second instalment in a series of four albums that conceptually focuses on the elemental forces of Fire, Water, Air and Earth.

Novarupta 'Marine Snow'

Heralding a journey of musical catharsis, Marine Snow effortlessly takes the torch from Novarupta’s acclaimed debut, Disillusioned Fire (2018); an album highlighted by Invisible Oranges as an, ‘especially brilliant example of metal’s ability to transform despair and destruction into beautiful new creations.’

Rolling from a passage of fire onto the ocean floor below, Marine Snow immerses listeners in a sea of blackened sludge, progressive metal and monochromatic psychedelia. As best exemplified on latest single, Broken Blue Cascades, which pressurises the senses with bottomless riffs and sublime vocals from former Red Sparowes/A Storm of Light vocalist, Josh Graham. A distinguished voice amongst many on an album which features Lea Amling (Besvärjelsen), Robert Lamu (Skraeckoedlan), Mike Paparo (Inter Arma), Arvid Hällagård (Greenleaf) and Martin Persner (Ghost/Magna Carta Cartel).
