Premiere: Fatso Jetson ‘Angels Flight’ – Taken From ‘Legends Of The Desert’ Split With Dali’s Llama
Desert Records have been making quite a name for themselves over the last couple of years, partly due to their truly awesome Legends Of The Desert series which is now at Volume 3. And for this release, you’re in for one hell of a treat as it features two bona fide, ahem, legends of the SolCal desert rock scene in the form of Fatso Jetson and Dali’s Llama.
Set to be released on the 24th March on various vinyl pressing and digital download, as long time fans of not only desert rock, but Fatso Jetson and how they helped shape the scene we hold dear to our hearts, it is with great honour that we can bring you the track Angels Flight, about which, founding member, and true legend (sorry, yes its that word again!) Mario Lalli says…
‘Coming out of the weird days of the pandemic, I started to travel to East LA to make music with my family in Fatso Jetson. During the lockdown times in the desert, I spent a lot of time writing on an acoustic guitar and just tracking spontaneous ideas for words and music. These four songs are some of those ideas, it’s a trip how the music morphed once the guys put in their ideas and we fired up the band on these arrangements.’
He continues, ‘I asked my dear friend Sean Wheeler to collaborate with us on the track Angels Flight, the song is a thought about moving to LA from the desert and the impressions city made on a desert head. We also invited a desert local musician Gar Robertson to play pedal steel guitar on the tune. It’s really great to do this split project with our old friends Dali’s Llama, we’ve been friends for over 30 years.’

More On Fatso Jetson, Dali’s Llama & ‘Legends Of The Desert’
This is the soundtrack to the New Wild West. The focus of the Legends Of The Desert series is to provide a modern perspective to the antiquated ‘Wild West’ we have etched in our brains. These songs and tales are not told by the same ol’ perspective of the white male cowboy. These are narratives told by those who never got their stories heard. We will hear from musicians, artists, natives, outlaws, desert rats, desert dwellers, cactuses and mesas, ravens and roadrunners, snakes and endless skies.
The bands are curated by label owner, Brad Frye. The requirements for bands to appear on the Legends Of The Desert series must hit certain criteria, besides making original & amazing desert rock music, they must be located geographically in the American Southwest. The states within this boundary include California (southern part), Arizona, Nevada, Utah, New Mexico, Colorado, Oklahoma, and Texas. They have to be currently active and in line with the Legends Of The Desert ethos of offering an updated perspective of the Wild West. Fuck John Wayne and all the outdated Wild West bullshit that we have been fed by movies and media.
As for Volume 3 of Legends Of The Desert, if you’re familiar with the Palm Desert/Coachella Valley desert rock scene, then you’ve heard of Kyuss, Yawning Man, Fu Manchu. But what about the other pioneers who have members that are credited with being a part of the original SoCal desert rock/punk scene in the 1980s?!
Fatso Jetson is an American desert rock band from Palm Desert, California, formed in 1994 by Yawning Man and The Sort of Quartet members Mario Lalli and Larry Lalli, along with Tony Tornay, and Dino Von Lalli (son of Mario). Fatso Jetson have remained an active force in underground rock for almost 25 years. They are often credited as originators of the desert strain of stoner rock made most famous by their younger neighbors Kyuss and Queens of the Stone Age. While musically similar to some of their stoner brethren, Fatso Jetson incorporates a variety of musical influences including punk, blues, psychedelic and heavy rock.
Dali’s Llama is a desert rock band from the Palm Springs/Palm Desert area of Southern California. Dali’s Llama was formed in 1993 and released their first album that same year. The band, started by the husband and wife team of Zach and Erica Huskey, have remained the only two original members from the beginning. Zach is the guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter, and Erica is the bass player. Dali’s Llama has released fifteen albums so far. Their music is in five films, including being featured in the desert rock documentary Lo Sound Desert. They have performed and/or toured throughout the southwestern United States, including the Stoner Hands of Doom and Doom In June fests.
The artwork is done by Joshua Mathus of Phoenix, AZ. He is commissioned to do all the album artwork (front and back covers) for the entire series!
