Through The Lens: Kungens Män / Dead Sea Apes / Crooked Head @ The White Hotel, Salford, 1st August 2023
Another trip to The White Hotel in Salford, which seems to be the venue of choice for Manchester-based promoter The Beauty Witch, and why the hell not as the reclaimed car repair garage that lies within counterfeit central has a certain charm, not to mention the awesome sonics they manage to transmit from the house sound system.
On tonight’s bill in a very dark, and very red, room is Sweden’s Kungens Män, a band I was lucky enough to catch at Roadburn 2022, and we were also honoured to premiere the track Stora Rummet from their current album Kungens Ljud & Bild in March last year. And it has to be said, they once again did not disappoint with their trippy mix of psych, kraut and proggy rock.
Support for the night was from local(ish) psychedelic warlords Dead Sea Apes who delivered a captivating yet potent set of their heavy instrumental psych, and if you’ve yet to hear them, be sure to check out their latest album Rewilding that’s out now via Cardinal Fuzz.
Opening for the night was Crooked Head, a new band, not only to these hallowed pages but also to our sacred scene as this was actually their first gig. A power trio who played a furious set of what could be described as heavy and filthy noise-rock who also feature Al Wilson on bass, a name some of you may know from his time in sludge doomers Ghold.
Now with all that out of the way, check out the photos from the awesome night of music below…
