Premiere: Kadabra ‘Ultra’ – Releases Tomorrow Via Heavy Psych Sounds

Heavy Psych Sounds have a firm place in our hearts at Shaman HQ, which Martin best describes as a label that has ‘released many stellar albums by up-and-coming bands that have left a mark on the underground scene’. Their latest offering Ultra, the spellbinding psychedelic stoner debut album from Spokane, Washington State’s newly found power trio Kadabra is a testament to that statement.

A band that was totally unknown to us until the promo landed the other week, and we were instantly bowled over by the sonics on offer across the seven tracks. As Martin waxed lyrical in his recent review about the album, Ultra checks all the boxes with what one looks for in a great stoner rock album. Fuzzy-tones? Check. Behind-the-beat drumming? Check. Thumping, distorted bass? For sure. Wailing, echoey vocals? Absolutely. Riffs galore? From start to finish’, while adding ‘This is as good of a debut album from a stoner rock band that I’ve heard in the last few years’.

More On Kadabra & ‘Ultra’

In 2020, a year wracked with cultural dissent and a global pandemic, fellow musicians and long-time friends Garrett Zanol (Blackwater Prophet) and Ian Nelson decided to start their own band. After retaining the talents of their favorite local drummer Chase Howard, the group got to work on writing an album that illustrates their current climate. In the fall of 2020, they tracked their debut album with Dawson Scholz.

With a warm and sultry sound that weaves together the lysergic flow and fuzzy drive of modern psychedelia, soaring bluesy riffage and magnetic reverb-drenched vocals, Ultra is an all-killer-no-filler album in the vein of early All Them Witches, Black Angels, Dead Meadow and Fuzz.
