Breaths is a project from multi-instrumentalist Jason Roberts who writes all the music, along with playing all the instruments that can be heard on his output. If that wasn’t enough gluten for punishment, he also takes it upon himself to handle the engineering, mixing and mastering for his recordings. Quite an undertaking, but one that gives him complete control, call it a master of his own destiny, to see his vision from the initial idea through to the finished article.
The music is also difficult to pigeonhole, taking on influences from doomgaze, post-hardcore, even black metal, and to quote Lee Beamish when he reviewed Breaths debut offering Lined In Silver that its ‘an epic, awe inspiring opus of such magnitude, it defies classification’. Now today, as Jason prepares to release the sophomore album under the Breaths moniker with the thought provoking title Though Life Has Turned Out Nothing Like I Imagined, It Is Far Better Than I Could Have Dreamt, we’re able to bring you the first cut entitled The Patriarch…
More On Breaths & ‘Though Life…’
Breaths is the passion project of multi-instrumentalist and songwriter, Jason Roberts. After writing, recording, and releasing his debut album, Lined In Silver during the COVID pandemic, his sophomore album began taking shape. Though Life… is inspired by trauma throughout his life, but intends to show the listener that through it all there is still hope and beauty to be found in this world. Though Life… combines elements of post-metal, black metal, doom metal, shoegaze, post-rock, progressive metal and post-hardcore into something unique and cohesive.
The album is for fans of Alcest, Deftones, Holy Fawn, Deafheaven, Sleep Token, Lantlos, and Astronoid.
Though Life…, Breaths’ sophomore album, further expands on the sound established on the debut, Lined In Silver, while remaining fresh and exciting. The album hopes to take the listener on a journey through Jason’s personal experiences, both light and dark, that will leave the listener feeling that though life has turned out nothing like he imagined, it is far better than he could have dreamt.
