Through The Lens: Jo Quail / Dead Space Chamber Music @ The White Hotel, Salford, 13th May 2023
Back in mid-May, I took another short trip down to The White Hotel in Salford when The Beauty Witch presented composer, cello virtuoso, and fan favourite here at The Shaman, Jo Quail as she travelled around Blighty for what she said was her first headline solo tour.
Support for the night came from Dead Space Chamber Music, a Bristol based collective of what you could describe as dark and experimental neo-folk, but for this tour, they stripped down from a four piece to a duo with Ellen Southern on vocals and percussion and Tom Bush on guitar, effects and samples.
Although I really like this venue as the sound and vibe it creates is second to none, they do have a tendency to set the lights really low, which on one hand creates a great atmosphere but can be difficult to photograph, which lately, I seemed to be having a bad run of.
But hey, minor gripe aside, it didn’t stop if from being a fantastic few hours, Jo Quail and Dead Space Chamber Music certainly commanded your attention during their sets and Ellen joined Jo for a song to provide improvised vocals, which they said changes from night to night, so maybe this was a glimpse into a future collaboration? Here’s hoping, now check out the photos from the gig below…
