Corrupt Moral Altar ‘Whiskey Sierra’ 7″/DD 2013

Occupying the noisy territory between sludge and grindcore, Liverpool’s Corrupt Moral Altar offer up a fine slice of filth on the four track ‘Whiskey Sierra’ EP. The foursome have released a fine selection of tunes that although influenced by many fine bands and scenes, have enough of their own style to make quite an impact on a busy scene.

EP opener and title track ‘Whiskey Sierra’ lays out the blueprint for the rest of the release by mixing up furious grindcore, slow crushing doom and killer grooves. John Cooke’s riffs drive the track along, with the rhythm section of bassist Adam Clarkson and drummer Tom Dring slowing things down in the middle of the track.

‘Lord’ starts of with a behemoth of a riff and has more of a hardcore sound, although it does throw in the occasional change of pace, especially towards the end when the track spends the last minute or so slowing down to its eventual end.

‘Politics Is A Bargain Between Beggars’ similarly starts out an all out grind attack, but throws in a riff Crowbar would be pleased with about a minute in, before returning to its vicious roots. Closer ‘You Don’t Have To Go To Clown College’ is the slowest paced of all of the tracks here, but that simply makes it heavier than the others. An excellent way to end an excellent EP.

By fusing together different styles and influences and still managing to find their own path, the lads have set their sights pretty high and if this is a sign of things to come, then they have definitely got the potential to reach those heights. The changes in pace serve them well and there is something for fans of all styles of extreme metal, and something that gets better the louder you play it.
