The Toolbox Murders - Anchor Bay - 2003
I'd been looking forward to seeing this film ever since I heard they where making it. But unfortunately it has to be said, it's not the film I was expecting. This one has really nothing to do with its 70's namesake apart from the bad guy wears a black ski mask and likes his weapons varied and available over the counter.
The story plays out in an old apartment building which has seen better days. A young couple who have recently moved into the building are finding it hard to settle in to there new rundown abode due to noise from all angles and all kinds. Nell the female of the couple starts to wonder just what sort of place they have moved into and starts to get really curious when a new found friend suddenly disappears.
There's a lot of different tools used with deadly intent during this, a claw hammer, nail gun and grinder being a few. The apartment building has a certain creepy charm to it and the whole place seems to have a green tinge. There is an old man who has lived in the building for 60 years. He has a few interesting bits of info regarding the building when he appears.
Anybody with an interest in this 70's stalk and slash film of the same name will be getting this one anyway to see what the deal is I’m sure. Well, as I said at the start of the review, no real connection apart from the handyman. A few good twists and tense moments but nothing really special and most certainly not what I expected. Finally this is left wide open for a sequel, more toolbox terror anybody?
