No ArtworkAtavist - Demo CDR 04

Atavist kick out some seriously heavy dirge like, distorted, downtuned sludge/doom. What struck me about this northern lot, apart from the huge sound they create, was their ability to flow effortlessly between crushingly slow Winter/Grief sections to more up tempo, snarling dog riffs akin to Iron Monkey and still mange to slip into primitive versions of Neurosis/Isis uplifting passages, when I say primitive, I don't mean as a poor and old hat copy but more about the atmosphere they create with only guitar & bass so the sound is more filled out with the huge rumbling sound of the bass which can also be said about the aforementioned bands.

Atavist are also a relatively new band on the circuit having played their debut gig in late 2004 (where I picked up this Demo) and are already causing a stir having landed some top support slots with the likes of 5ives Continuum Research Project, Sunno))) & Esoteric. So to some up, Atavist are most definitely worth keeping an eye on for future releases as this Demo is limited to just 100 copies, which I'm led to believe is sold out, so it's well worth trying to beg, borrow or steal a copy off someone until a new release sees the light of day.
