Thade Interview
Thade reside in Manchester and unleash what can only be described as heavy, ferocious and down right filthy sludge/doom with an overwhelming passion, although as yet they’ve still to complete a recording their entirely satisfied with, they’ve already had the opportunity to play some high profile support slots so I caught up with their guitarist Ads to see what 2007 had in store for the terror that is Thade!
Hey Ads, thanks for agreeing to answer my questions so as with all my interviews, let’s start at the beginning by giving us a brief run down of your history, how you got together and your current line up?
Current line up is Blow & Jones – Voice, Myself (Ads) and Ky – Guitars and Breen & Beanie – Bass & Drums. We were all in different bands, me and Blow were in Levien, Beanie in Ripley, Ky & Jones were (and still are) in Year Of The Monkey and Breen still plays with Day For Airstrikes (as well as a few other bands!) Basically Thade came together when Ripley and Levien ended and me and Beanie would get mashed and chat about making a band that was pure filth, the original idea was to cross The Beach Boys with Eyehategod! (two minds on drugs!), the combining of the two bands never really happened!
Your MySpace page address is simply ‘thadeterror’ and that pretty much sums up you up, but how would you describe the devastating doom Thade creates?
I don’t really see us as strictly a doom band, as in, there’s an element of hope to the music if that makes sense? Like a bit more up-beat at points than a stereotypical doom band, which is what I was aiming for with Thade.
And what influences you both musically and lyrically?
The love of the darker side of life! Musically my biggest influences were Eyehategod & Iron Monkey but also loads of other bands like The Beach Boys and Kate Bush, oh and Canvas too! Amazing band! I can’t really speak too much about the lyrics being a guitarist and all but I do know that there’s a tongue in cheek element to the lyrics at points, which I’m happy about! I don’t like everything to be proper serious all the time, got to have a laugh innit!
Your one of a few bands to incorporate 2 lead vocalists into your music with ferocious effect, was this deliberate or something that just happened and felt right?
Yeah it was definitely deliberate, Mine & Blows old band Levien also had 2 vocalists and its just something I think works really well, provided you can get 2 singers who can work together! When me and Beanie were thinking about who else to ask to join the band the main thing was that we wanted people we knew, people without massive ego’s above anything else really and I think we chose the perfect 4 other people to join.
You released a Self Titled CDR which was recorded in 2005, but on a whole you didn’t seem to push it, is there any reason for this?
Yeah, when we first recorded that it was when we’d just written the songs, listening back to that recording doesn’t really sound as we do now, even playing the same songs off the recording. I just personally don’t like it that much, its too fast!
And when are Thade likely to enter to the studio again to unleash a long over due recording?
Anytime now! Creely from Raucous was supposed to be recording us but we crashed his laptop when he came down to record us! We’re supposed to be setting up another date to record some stuff but haven’t got round to it yet! Hopefully it won’t be too far ahead in the future.
And what about Label interest? Have any labels out there shown an interest in releasing anything by Thade? If not then why not!
Nah nothing as of yet! We’re all fairly reclusive these days, not getting out to gigs and that definitely puts you at a disadvantage. But to be honest we haven’t really sent anything off to any labels as we don’t actually have a recording that we’re 100% happy with.
Like with most city based bands, you’ve had the opportunity to share a stage with some higher profile bands like Made Out Of Babies, Sourvein & Atavist, how did these come about and do you think living in Manchester helps you get these gigs?
Most of these gigs were through the lovely fellas at Future Noise. We all got to know them through our old bands. When we first started off we had to always put gigs on ourselves and luckily people did used to come out and see us. But yeah after a bit we got to know Future Noise and they put all our bands on over time in the past so when Thade came out I guess they had respect enough for us all to give our new effort a go! But yeah with Thade getting some of the better gigs was a lot easier than when we first started out.
And what are your thoughts on the Manchester ‘Extreme Music’ scene at the moment as it seems like there’s gigs happening there nearly every other day!?
Yeah its really hard to keep up with! especially being broke all the time! I miss too many of the gigs in Manchester for that reason only. Some Amazing bands in Manchester at the moment though yeah. My only gripe with the music in Manchester is all these “metalcore” or “melodic hardcore” bands that seem to be cropping up all the time and to be honest, they mostly just rip each other or bigger bands off!
Along with fellow Mancunians Raucous, you also use the warped services of ‘Eman’ who projects a harrowing montage of visuals during your more recent live sets, I’ve been lucky enough to experience this a couple of times and it really adds a new dimension to the terror that is Thade. So can you tells us, like Raucous, how you came to collaborate with Eman and how do you feel his visuals enhance your live set?
That came about when we played at Raucous’s album release party. We have all known E-man for a while and he was doing the visuals for Raucous. I think he felt like he should try and whip something together for our set too, which he did in the form of a very very bizarre French film, which I can’t remember the name of! The visuals just go with Thade, we’re all about the wrongery and filth and that film is precisely that!
Finally, what else can we expect from Thade in 2007?
2007 hopefully a nice recording that we’re all happy with, some new songs and hopefully, a bit later in the year some more gigs! We’re still on our Xmas break at the moment! Which is quite bad but I think we all needed a bit of time out over Xmas and that, get our heads sorted (and our bank accounts!) and get back to the filth!
